gala, Mt Eden

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

Located in Zone 23 on Edwin St, gala is a spacious cafe with a modernist look.

I picked up a soy mocha to go (alas, no time today to sit around and enjoy) for $4, which is about average. No complaints here, the coffee was smooth and chocolate-y, and not overly strong. As it was a cold day outside, the few minutes standing in front of the gas fire was quite enjoyable as well. :)

A return trip is planned for when I have a little more time to peruse and enjoy the menu.

Cafe Redwoods, Swanson

Monday, August 27th, 2007

Out in Swanson, Cafe Redwoods is a great cafe and if you like your coffee strong, then this is the place for you.

We visit this place on a semi-regular basis and the food and coffee are always top-notch. Today we had wedges, with bacon, cheese and sour cream and a soy mocha. The wedges were piping hot, with a mountain of sour cream and even shared between two, there was plenty. The mocha was strong, but still had that chocolate-y taste — and it arrived with a chocolate fish and two marshmallows. I have to admit that after the wedges there was absolutely no room for marshmallows (no, I don’t add them to the coffee - makes it too sweet).

Cafe Redwoods has an A grade food rating from Waitakere City Council. As I said before, we visit here on a semi-regular basis, and will continue to do so.

DFC Cafe, Glenfield

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

Visited DFC on the upper level of Glenfield Mall last night. I’m not usually fond of cafes in malls, as they tend to be in the middle of the hubbub, hugely noisy, and all and sundry are peering over your shoulder to see what you’re doing; a zoo basically. But DFC is located away from the food-court, and in an actual store space, so gained brownie points here.

It was reasonably empty when we arrived and so service was good, it proceeded to get busier as time went on. We ordered chicken and apricot filo parcels with salad and 2 coffees. The filos were a good size and tasty, the salad appeared as if it was one of those pre-packaged supermarket salads with some dressing on top, but for $6 I wasn’t complaining. The soy mocha ($3.70) - which can occasionally cause problems in some places - was no trouble, and the request for the large latte ($3.50) to not be in a bowl was also easily handled. The coffees were of average strength and hot.

DFC has an A grade food rating from North Shore City Council. I would pick it as being the best cafe in the Glenfield Mall, and will probably get a return visit.

This site will provide info on cafes and the occasional restaurant, and whether they warrant a return visit. We’ll also dig out links to other sites about coffee, and will generally post our random thoughts about coffee, cafes and anything in between.
